Dental Health Workshops

Our younger patients  had an opportunity to “play dentist” when hygienists Helen Lindley and Joanne Goddard-Gallery hosted Dental Health Workshops as part of the practice’s National Smile Month activities.

National Smile Month is the UK’s largest and longest-running oral health campaign which aims to raise awareness of important health issues, and make a positive difference to the oral health of millions of people throughout the UK.

The fun but informative sessions catered for various age groups with the Under 5’s ‘Discovering the Dental Chair’ while 6-10 year olds concentrated on ‘Better Brushing’. Those aged 10 and over examined ‘Sugar in the Diet’ and there were competitions and prizes on offer for all. Read more

Dental hygienists and dental therapists can carry out their full scope of practice without prescription and without the patient having to see a dentist first. This means you can continue to attend your own dentist for on-going regular dental treatment and see our  Direct Access hygienists for additional gum care or cosmetic cleaning if you wish, or see our Direct Access hygienists even if you don’t currently have a dentist. Infection Control Scare

More than 2,000 people have been tested for HIV and hepatitis amid concerns a dentist flouting infection control rules put them at risk of contracting blood-borne viruses.

Desmond D’Mello’s alleged refusal to follow NHS safety guidelines sparked the biggest patient recall after he was secretly filmed treating 166 patients across three days.

NHS England said today 2,403 people have contacted a helpline established to offer advice to former patients.

A spokeswoman confirmed 2,258 former patients have had blood tests to establish if they are at risk. Read more

One kiss transfers 80 million bacteria

What’s in His Kiss?

In the 1960s, a singer named Betty Everett belted, “If you wanna know if he loves you so, it’s in his kiss!”

Covered by Cher in the 1990s, the song neglects to mention what is also “in his kiss” – 80 million bacteria, according to a new study published in the journal Microbiome.
Before germaphobes swear off kissing forever, it should be noted that over 100 trillion microorganisms naturally live in our bodies. Called the microbiome, they are vital for digesting food, synthesizing nutrients and preventing disease. Read more
